When I say “flower” what comes to your mind? We each have our own set of preconceived images associated with visual words catalogued in our minds. Often as we see a scene we think “what a beautiful field” (or flower or whatever). But the word association ie: ”field” makes our brains jump to our personal indexed image of what a field is and looks like, which interferes with our full visual perception and appreciation of just how beautiful the components of the scene (the colors, textures and composition) really are. My interest in abstract art is to bring those elements forward by obscuring somewhat the actual item or scene so that we might see things in a more childlike way yet still with an adult’s appreciation. God has created a beautiful masterpiece and He paid attention to every little detail. I want to see and share those beautiful details. As Georgia OKeefe said “I want to make them see what I see of flowers”.

I am inspired by the visions I see around me. I am blessed to live in an area that is still somewhat rural and the serenity of the fields and pastures still captures me. I think I breathe a little deeper each time I see a tranquil vista. I often snap a photo or make a quick sketch for later paintings in an attempt to preserve the moment and therefore the feeling. I often leave in a piece of the road as part of the composition because the vistas are so often seen from my car. It is sometimes symbolized with a yellow line. It is my hope that my work evokes a pleasant response in the viewer and that somehow makes their life a little happier or more tranquil if only for a moment.

I also enjoy creating custom pieces including travel and architectural artwork. I try to find the uniqueness in each building or scene and depict its character so the finished product is more of a portrait than just a rendering. Often I am asked to paint a portrait of a sentimental place or a vacation memory. Sometimes a painting or drawing is able to say much more than a photograph. I feel honored to bring someone’s memory to life and hope that the emotions come back each time they see the piece.
